As communities struggle to address rising housing costs and household instability, the debate often centers on solutions such as increased housing construction and stronger tenant protections.
The League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Phoenix and the League of Women Voters of Arizona will host Shane Phillips, author of the new book, The Affordable City, to explore the roles that tenant protections, housing supply, and subsidies can play in the effort to make communities more affordable and accessible.
Phillips will examine concrete actions — including rezoning, rent stabilization, housing vouchers, density bonuses, homeownership programs and more — that housing advocates and policymakers can work to enact in their communities. Phillips makes a moral and economic case for why each is essential and recommendations for making them work together.
There is no single solution to the U.S. housing crisis. According to Shane Phillips, guest speaker at our January forum, we’re not building as much housing as we did in the 1960’s when we had 12 million fewer people. He says the scarcity has caught up with us.
