Join us as we lead with courage and take action to defend democracy.

In a time when democracy demands more of us, this year’s Council focuses on turning courage into action. Join League members from across Arizona to strengthen leadership, deepen engagement, and build the capacity needed to meet this moment.

LWVAZ Biennial Council is the opportunity for League members across the state to develop leadership capacity in their local leagues, vote on business items requiring member input, and engage new members more deeply in League work. This year, Council will be held as a full-day virtual event on ZOOM.

A featured plenary session, “Courage in Action: Defending Democracy Across Our Communities,” will anchor the day’s program. This session brings together two critical perspectives on protecting democracy:

  • Legal Advocacy:  ACLU of Arizona – Director Victoria López (pending confirmation)
Offering insight into current threats to civil liberties, ongoing legal battles, and the role of advocacy organizations in defending democratic institutions. This perspective highlights what courage looks like within legal and institutional spaces, and the importance of strong partnerships—including with the League—in advancing and protecting rights.

  • Community & Tribal Engagement:  Native Vote – Executive Director of Arizona Native Vote (confirmed)
Sharing lived experience and on-the-ground work to expand voting access in tribal communities, including the real barriers voters face—from access challenges to intimidation—and the power of community-based organizing and trust-building. This perspective grounds the work of democracy in people, place, and lived reality.

Together, these perspectives reflect the full spectrum of courage in action:

  • Why this moment matters

  • What defending democracy looks like in practice

  • Where the League fits—and how we can act

Through this plenary and three interactive breakout discussions, members will explore:

  1. What nonpartisanship means in today’s political climate—and how we act with integrity and impact

  2. How to navigate difficult conversations and uncertain spaces with confidence and courage

  3. How we engage members and build a strong, sustainable pipeline of League leaders
